Principally Speaking ….

Dear Edison Parents,

Our school year is off to a great start. As principal, I am looking forward to this year with heartfelt enthusiasm. At Edison we are committed to maintaining high academic expectations and good social growth for all students.

It is my intention to work closely with the Edison staff to see that each student reaches his or her potential, not only in terms of academics, but also in terms of emotional growth and good, solid work/study habits. As a way of helping children meet these goals, we will focus on being respectful, responsible, and giving one’s best effort.

Illinois has adopted common core state standards for reading and math. Our teachers are working hard to prepare our students for the new state tests coming in March and May. As a learning community, we insist that every student have access to high-quality, rigorous and relevant 21st century learning. We recognize that data is a powerful indicator of student progress. Every student is formally assessed three times a year in reading and math to determine what interventions and learning experiences are needed to improve student performance. We know that a child does not stop learning at the end of the school day. The key to improved student performance is involving parents. Getting parent and community support makes all the difference when it comes to educating our students. I need your help in the important areas of behavior, attitude, and effort. Attending school every day is essential. The more supportive and consistent the message between home and school, the better the climate of the school will be.

I welcome your comments and feedback and will always be available to discuss policies and decisions made at Edison School. You can contact me at 708-783-4400 or e-mail

I am looking forward to working with you again this year.

Respectfully Yours,

Dr. Janice Bernard
